WARNING: Fake Microsoft Outlook update contains virus for ID theft

October 23rd, 2009 by Mike Kaufman

I just received a rather convincing email advising me to “update” my Outlook product.  Upon review, the links in the email were bogus and led me to investigate a bit further.  Turns out that the email was attempting to lure me into manually installing a nasty piece of software, and to help my clients avoid falling into this trap I thought I’d post a little information about it.

Here is what the email looks like. If you receive this email, delete it immediately.  Microsoft is not in the habit of emailing updates or links to updates without provocation;  there are plenty of other mechanisms in place to deliver updates to Windows machines.

Here is a link to an article about this particular virus propagation method.

Thanks for taking the time to read this update.   Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Mike Kaufman

Internet and Network Dangers

April 23rd, 2009 by Jerry

Small to large global enterprises rely on the Internet for efficient access to information and resources. As a result, companies are faced with many challenges relating to managing the risks to in-house networks and data. The risks can be classified in four categories:

1. attacks to data and the network,

2. abuses and inappropriate use of resources by authorized users,

3. legal liabilities based on recent legislation requiring network managers to provide safe and appropriate environments for all network users,

4. the ability to efficiently administer networks. Some threats fall into
multiple risk categories.

Impacted employee productivity
Restricting access to inappropriate Web sites helps companies prevent excessive non-productive Web surfing and preserves network bandwidth. According to a recent survey, employees report:
16% have knowingly surfed pornography sites at work at least once
40% have seen co-workers surf pornography sites
32% have seen co-workers surf gambling sites

IMC WILL PROVIDE AN ON-SITE ASSESSMENT OF YOUR RISKS OF INTERNET USAGE, UNSOLICITED EMAIL, AND OTHER SECURITY ISSUES. PLEASE CALL!

Hydronic Technology, Inc.

April 17th, 2009 by Jerry

IMC is pleased to announce that  Hydronic Technology, Inc. will soon be making the move to FACTS 7.6.   Longstanding clients of IMC, and a company very familiar with older versions of FACTS, the personnel at Hydronic Technology are looking forward to implementing and capitalizing on all of the new features of the current version of the software.

Here at IMC, we are excited about helping them move to the newer FACTS product.  Along with the software upgrade, Hydronic Technology is moving the server to a more secure location to ensure business continuity in the event of a disaster, and implementing Microsoft’s Terminal Server technology to ensure that the program will run quickly and efficiently at all 3 branches.
