WARNING: Fake Microsoft Outlook update contains virus for ID theft

I just received a rather convincing email advising me to “update” my Outlook product.  Upon review, the links in the email were bogus and led me to investigate a bit further.  Turns out that the email was attempting to lure me into manually installing a nasty piece of software, and to help my clients avoid falling into this trap I thought I’d post a little information about it.

Here is what the email looks like. If you receive this email, delete it immediately.  Microsoft is not in the habit of emailing updates or links to updates without provocation;  there are plenty of other mechanisms in place to deliver updates to Windows machines.

Here is a link to an article about this particular virus propagation method.

Thanks for taking the time to read this update.   Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Mike Kaufman
